The Meldrum Academy Community Café aims to strengthen the bonds between our school and our wider community by offering a warm welcome to visitors to our Café. This is held several times per year and celebrates some of the main events in our calendar, including Armistice Day. It is run by a variety of pupils who bake for and serve at the Café, building confidence and skills along the way.
We collaborate with our Performing Arts Faculty to provide entertainment for our guests and experience for our pupils.
The Meldrum Academy Community Café brings learning to life by connecting our young people with the wider community in a welcoming, meaningful way. Running several times throughout the year, the café marks key events in both our school and wider social calendar while providing an inclusive space where every learner can take part and succeed.
The young people plan, bake and serve, developing confidence, independence and essential life skills such as teamwork, communication and customer service. The café is designed to support young people with a wide range of additional support needs, ensuring everyone has a valued role and opportunity to shine.
In partnership with our Performing Arts Faculty, our learners also provide entertainment, creating a vibrant, community-focused experience that celebrates achievement, builds skills and promotes inclusion at the heart of our school. Of particular note is the inclusion of our Makaton Choir, made up of young people from our Enhanced Provision. Through song, sign and performance, the choir provides a powerful voice for pupils who may otherwise find communication more challenging, fostering confidence, self-expression and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
Previous cafés have seen over 100 guests in attendance, experiencing both the delights of our home baked goods and the entertainment provided by our talented, hardworking and thought provoking young people. A well established part of our school life, our Community Cafes are seen by many as the highlight of a school term, and a key part of our school life. It captures the very best of who we are — a caring, inclusive community where young people grow in confidence, find their voice and create something truly special together.
