Our vision
Our Additional Support for Learning faculty is dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where every learner is supported to overcome barriers and achieve their full potential. By fostering collaboration and delivering tailored interventions, we empower young people to thrive in learning, life, and work.
At Meldrum Academy, we believe that every young person deserves the chance to thrive, no matter what challenges they may face. Our Additional Support for Learning (ASL) team is here to make sure that all young people get the support they need to feel included, confident and ready to succeed—both in school and in life beyond the classroom. We work closely with young people, families, and staff from the very start of your journey with us—even before you arrive in S1. We spend time getting to know you and what helps you learn best, so we can make sure those supports are in place from day one. We also share this information with your teachers to help them understand how to support you in class. Our team is made up of specialist teachers and Pupil Support Assistants (PSAs), and we work in lots of different ways—from offering one-to-one or small group support, to helping all teachers build their knowledge and skills to support every learner. We’re also developing more training for staff in areas like ADHD, trauma-informed approaches, and assistive technology, so we can continue improving how we meet everyone’s needs. We’re really proud of the support available through our Connections area, which offers a calm, supportive space for targeted help. We also offer exciting learning opportunities like the Dynamic Youth Award, Grow and Learn, Bike Maintenance and our Community Café project—designed to help you build practical skills, confidence and a real sense of achievement. You’ll always find that we put our young people at the heart of what we do. We listen to your voice, value your ideas, and want to make sure you feel safe, respected, and supported throughout your time at Meldrum Academy. Our goal is simple: to help every young person become a successful learner, confident individual, responsible citizen and effective contributor. We believe in your potential—and we’re here to help you realise it.
Young people supported by ASL staff will be encouraged to engage with learning in all curricular areas. For our young people with more complex and significant additional support needs, this may mean that they attend smaller classes in certain curricular areas supported by both an ASL teacher and a mainstream subject specialist. For young people who access our R110 provision, ASL staff will liaise with mainstream subject teachers to ensure that all young people are encouraged to keep up with their learning.
Young people attending our Hub provision will experience Literacy, Numeracy, Health and Wellbeing, Performing Arts, Expressive Arts, Life Skills Cookery and Outdoor Learning.
Young people in the senior phase are able to access a wide range of courses at N1, 2 and 3 level. They may also be able to undertake additional Personal Development Awards, or bank volunteering hours towards independent awards such as Saltire or Dynamic Youth Awards.
