Term 1 Tracking Reports for S2 and S3
S2 Home Economics:
At Meldrum Academy, young people begin Home Economics in S2. Many have never experienced practical cookery before, so this year serves as an introduction to basic kitchen skills. Unlike other subjects, most young people will be working at Curriculum for Excellence Level 2, with only a few reaching Level 3 at this early stage.
In Term 1 we have been focusing on two key learning outcomes:
Keeping Safe and Hygienic
Food and Textile Technologies
There have been no formal written or practical assessments yet. All progress is based on weekly teacher observations during lessons. The overall progress grade reflects an average of your young person's performance so far. As young people often progress differently across various outcomes, the grade may rise or fall throughout S2 and S3 depending on how they engage with each new area of learning.

In Term 2, young people have been working on 2 CfE outcomes - :
Keeping Safe and Hygienic
Assessed by:-
1 – Weekly Teacher observation
2 – A Spaghetti Bolognese practical assessment (Safe and hygienic practises)
3 – Written assessment on how to prevent food poisoning
Food and Textile Technologies
Assessed by -:
1 – Weekly Teacher observation
2 – A Spaghetti Bolognese practical assessment (cookery processes, food preparation techniques)
These assessments may result in your young person's level going up or down as different areas of the curriculum are assessed each term, and different CfE outcomes are focused on. An overall lower level doesn’t necessarily mean that your child is not making progress.
Core PE:
Your young person will get an average grade for how they are progressing at present in the following benchmarks:
- Physical competencies
- Cognitive skills
- Personal qualities
- Physical fitness
Please be aware this level is only based on activities covered to date and may not reflect an accurate picture of progress at present. You may find, for example that your young person has taken part in an activity that does or does not reflect their strengths at present, so their level may go up or down.

S3 Home Economics
At Meldrum Academy, young people who choose Home Economics in S3 continue to build on the practical cookery skills developed in S2, preparing them for progression to the National 4/5 Practical Cookery course next year. Alongside this, young people have one period each week of theory-based learning, where this term they are working towards their REHIS Food Hygiene certificate.
Term 1
As it is still early in the academic year, only a limited number of benchmarks have been assessed so far. These include:
Keeping Safe and Hygienic
Food and Textile Technologies
Most young people are currently working within Curriculum for Excellence Level 3, with a small number beginning to achieve at Level 4. At this stage, there have been no formal written or practical assessments; progress is measured through ongoing teacher observation during lessons. The overall progress grade provided reflects an average of performance so far. Please note that as the young people engage with new areas of learning across S3, progress may vary and grades may change accordingly.
In Term 2, young people have been working on 2 CfE outcomes - :
Keeping Safe and Hygienic
Assessed by:-
1 – Weekly Teacher observation
2 – REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland)
(Safe and hygienic practises)
Food and Textile Technologies
Assessed by -:
1 – Weekly Teacher observation
These assessments may result in your young person’s level going up or down as different areas of the curriculum are assessed each term, and different CfE outcomes are focused on. An overall lower level doesn’t necessarily mean that your child is not making progress.

S3 Elective PE:
In elective PE we assess using the same benchmarks as core PE, but your young person will access more time in the department and will therefore have more chance to progress.
