Within Meldrum Academy, we understand the importance of Inclusion, Equality and Diversity within our school community and recognise as such. The photo on the right is the LGBTQ+ Teacher Visibility Information Pack available to staff as a voluntary additional resource.
The whole purpose of these very simple packs is to aid in visible Inclusivity. The sad reality is that a lot of our LGBTQ+ young people feel afraid, shamed and scared to confide in many school staff as they don't know who to turn to or how they will be received. The purpose of these packs is to help instil confidence in our LGBTQ+ school community AND to instil confidence for staff in the correct avenues to take.
These packs have been very popular with staff and have really made a positive impact within the Teacher/Pupil relationship. Never underestimate the power of what a small visible gesture like this will do, this will mean so very much to our LGBTQ+ school community. 🏳️🌈
Every Thursday, Meldrum Academy hosts our resident LGBTQ+ group – P.R.I.D.E. led by our Pupil Support Worker Miss Gray, where we share our experiences, support each other through any events or experiences both positive and negative, occasionally go on trips, have our own “Queer” library (pupil requested & recommended) and most importantly try to shine a more positive light on the LGBTQ+ school community. Pupils can freely identify as they wish to be identified without fear of hate, ridicule or judgement. Everyone, including allies are welcome!
Within this pupil-led group, P.R.I.D.E. have a monthly Information Wall in the main foyer where their aim is to INFORM & EDUCATE about different issues, pronouns, sexualities, genders, lifestyle choices and dispel common myths within the LGBTQ+ umbrella. This way, our school community can make informed decisions and opinions for themselves if they choose to.
Meldrum Academy and our LGBTQ+ & Equality Group have an exciting addition to our Senior Supporter Roles.
Please welcome Emilee Munro (Em to her homies), who is the FIRST S6 Representative for LGBTQ+ Inclusion and Equality.
This is a huge milestone for any secondary school, and as a result Em is also a part of an exciting new Senior Ambassador Team for Inclusion within the school.
Emilee is such an inspiring young person who embodies the school community values who also wants to help reach as much young people as possible to be the best they can be whilst being true to themselves. Em’s aim is to shine a positive light and bringing informed knowledge though kindness, something Em is very passionate about.
Please feel free to speak to Em about their journey, hopes and plans for Meldrum Academy whilst in this role.
